چکیده

A study was conducted to compare the growth performance and carcass characteristics of guinea fowl (GF) with Horro (HR) Tilili (TL) local chickens, Potchefstroom Koekoek (PK) exotic chicken. Seventy-five-day-old chicks from each genotype were used in 3 replications a completely randomized design. Commercial starter grower feed fed ad libitum during 20 weeks study. Daily dry matter intake g/bird greater for PK (70) than GF (63), HR (59), TL (61). The final body weight (FBW) higher (2022), intermediate (1567) (1539), low (1286). average daily gain (ADG) 9 GF, 11 14 PK. eviscerated highest (1679), followed by (1323) (1249) lowest (913). breast (g/bird) (436) (281), (311), (284). thigh (303) (252), (208) (157). abdominal fat content (29 g), (12 g each), (6 g). ultimate pH24 h (6.0) (5.8), (5.7). had pH24h meat (6.2), others 5.8. darker normal color compared chickens. chickens could be as alternate meat-type poultry species continuous selection.

Histomorphology of Thymus Gland in Guinea Fowl (Numida meleagris)

The thymus gland is a lymphoid tissue derived from III and IV pharyngeal pouches. It is the source of stem cells that migrate to other lymphoid organs and participate in immune reactions (Kent, 1978). The thymus gland is regarded immunologically as a primary or central lymphoid organ and its presence is essential for the development of peripheral lymphoid tissues and their associated adaptive i...

Performance of guinea fowl Numida meleagris during jumping requires storage and release of elastic energy.

The ability of birds to perform effective jumps may play an important role in predator avoidance and flight initiation. Jumping can provide the vertical acceleration necessary for a rapid takeoff, which may be particularly important for ground-dwelling birds such as phasianids. We hypothesized that by making use of elastic energy storage and release, the leg muscles could provide the large powe...

Performance and carcass characteristics of guinea fowl fed on dietary Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf powder as a growth promoter

The present work aimed at studying growth pattern and carcass traits in pearl grey guinea fowl fed on dietary Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf powder (NLP) over a period of 12 weeks. Day old guinea fowl keets (n=120) were randomly assigned to four treatment groups, each with 3 replicates. The first treatment was designated as control (T0) in which no supplement was added to the feed, while in tre...

Histogenesis of the Oesophagus of Guinea Fowl (Numida meleagris) at Prehatch and Posthatch

The histogenesis of the primordial oesophagus was studied to determine the period in which the tunics of the oesophagus developed and became functional in the helmeted guinea fowl (Numida meleagris). Eighteen embryos and nine keets were studied at prehatch and posthatch, respectively. Simple columnar epithelium surrounded by mesenchymal cells was obvious at the 8th day of embryonic development....

Sexing in guinea fowls (Numida meleagris).

Despite the potentials and contributions of guinea fowls to economic and social life in Ghana, accurate sex identification in these birds is still a major problem. Three hundred and sixty guinea fowls (180 birds per sex) were used in determining a more accurate and farmer friendly sexing technique. The sexing methods explored were vent, biometric, and molecular techniques. Vent sexing was accom...
